Stump Grinding Cost in Huntsville: Depth, Access, and Cleanup

The tree is gone, but the stump still catches the mower. Most people want to know what grinding will cost before anyone comes out. Two stumps with the same width can have different prices because the roots, the space around the stump and the cleanup change the work. This page covers published national ranges and the details that move a stump grinding estimate in Huntsville and nearby North Alabama.

What published guides say one stump costs

According to Thumbtack's 2026 guide, the national average for grinding one stump is $307 to $426, with a low to high spread of $220 to $544. The guide breaks that average down by trunk diameter, from $267 to $354 for stumps under 12 inches across up to $372 to $494 for stumps 36 to 48 inches across.

HomeGuide's 2026 guide lists $120 to $400 for one stump and $300 to $800 for an extra-large stump. Angi's 2026 guide says most homeowners pay around $250 to grind a stump, with small stumps and softer wood as low as $30 and large stumps and hardwood species up to $1,600.

These published guides provide national figures, not our prices. Their figures differ because each guide draws on its own data. Use them as a rough frame, then compare written estimates for the same work.

Stump size: why the root flare counts

Thumbtack says most stump grinding professionals base their quotes on the tree's diameter, measured at the widest point, while HomeGuide says contractors measure the diameter of the trunk's base, not just the cut surface. On many trees, the base flares out past the cut, so the stump can be wider at ground level than it looks from above.

Surface roots take more work. Roots running out across the lawn are not part of the stump itself, so if you want them ground down too, say so and ask for them to be listed in the estimate.

The type of wood matters, too. Thumbtack notes that hardwood stumps such as oak, hickory and elm are tough and may cost more to grind, while rotting or old stumps are easier and often cost less. HomeGuide adds that old hardwood stumps take longer and need bigger equipment than young, rotted or softwood stumps.

More stumps, lower cost per stump

Thumbtack says additional stumps cost less because the equipment and labor are already on hand. For each stump after the first, HomeGuide lists $30 to $60 and Angi gives about $40 to $75.

Our crew can grind several stumps in one visit. Point out every stump you want done during the estimate, including the small ones along a fence line, so the full scope is priced together.

How deep the grinder goes

Grinding deeper takes more machine time and leaves more chips behind. HomeGuide says standard service grinds 4 to 6 inches below ground level, and that grinding out the whole stump and large roots up to 18 inches deep takes more labor and costs more. The same guide suggests grinding 6 to 8 inches down if you plan to plant grass.

On our jobs, depth depends on the stump, the obstacles around it and what you plan to do with the spot. The crew confirms a practical depth during the estimate, so tell us whether the spot is headed for grass, a garden bed or something built.

Grinding reduces the stump below grade. It does not excavate the entire root system. If you are planning a slab, a patio or a new tree in the same spot, read stump grinding vs. root removal before you decide.

Access and what sits around the stump

A stump in an open front yard is the simplest case. One behind a fence, beside a driveway, next to a foundation or in a bed full of plants takes more planning. Thumbtack says stumps in concrete, near a home's foundation, on rocky soil or blocked by other obstructions may cost more for the added time and tools. Angi lists challenging terrain, limited access and stumps far from where the contractor can park as reasons for added fees.

Before grinding, our crew checks access, the stump's size, nearby hardscape and visible obstacles. Checking those details first helps keep a simple yard job from turning into damage to a gate, driveway, irrigation feature or surrounding bed.

You can help before the visit:

  • Leave the gate open or unlocked, and note how wide it is.
  • Move cars, trailers, toys and pots away from the stump.
  • Flag sprinkler heads and any private lines you know about, such as irrigation or yard lighting.
  • Mention rocks, old fence posts or anything else you know is buried near the stump.

Buried utility lines

A grinder cuts below the surface of the ground. Alabama 811 says anyone who plans to dig should contact 811 before digging to have the approximate location of buried utilities marked. The service is free, and a locate request should go in at least 2 to 10 full working days before the project starts. The utility companies mark their own lines, and digging can begin only after all of them have responded.

Ask who will request the locate and when, so the timing of your grinding visit allows for it.

Chips, rocks and backfill: the cleanup line

Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil where the stump stood. What happens to that pile can make up a real part of the difference between two estimates.

Thumbtack says some companies' per-inch rate includes cleanup while others charge extra, and it puts the average price for hauling away the stump and wood chips at $100 to $120. Cleanup and disposal run $2 to $4 per inch of stump diameter in HomeGuide's guide. Angi gives $50 to $200 for hauling away the waste.

There are three common choices:

  • Leave the chips in the hole and on top as mulch.
  • Rake the chips back into the hole and level the ground.
  • Haul the chips away and fill the hole with topsoil, ready for seed or sod.

HomeGuide lists topsoil at $10 to $50 per yard if the hole needs filling. Our estimates show which stumps are included and how chips and surface cleanup will be handled. One customer described a stump grinding visit this way: "He cleaned up the chips and leveled the ground."

What a stump grinding estimate should spell out

When you compare two prices, make sure they describe the same job:

  • Which stumps are included, and how each one was measured
  • Whether surface roots are ground, and how far out from the stump
  • The planned depth for each stump
  • What happens to the chips, and whether the ground is leveled
  • Whether topsoil, seed or sod is part of the price or left to you

Two estimates can be far apart because one includes haul-off and leveling and the other stops when the stump is below grade. When a stump grinding job is added to a tree removal, our estimates list it separately so you can see exactly what is included. For the tree side of the job, see tree removal cost in Huntsville.

Getting a number for your stump

The ranges on this page come from published national guides. Your price depends on the stump's width, how many stumps there are, how deep they need to go, how the crew reaches them and what you want done with the chips. Tell us what you plan to do with the spot, and we will price the full scope in writing. You can plan a free estimate, see stump grinding in Huntsville, or look through photos of our work.

Common questions

How much does it cost to grind one stump?
Published national figures vary by guide. Thumbtack's 2026 guide puts the average at $307 to $426 for one stump, and HomeGuide lists $120 to $400. Your price depends on the stump's width, depth, access and cleanup.
Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?
Usually, per stump. HomeGuide and Angi both list lower prices for each additional stump than for the first. Include every stump you want done during the estimate so the crew can price the full scope together.
Does stump grinding remove the roots?
No. Grinding reduces the stump below grade and does not excavate the entire root system. That is usually less disruptive to the surrounding yard.
Is cleanup included in the price?
It depends on the company. Thumbtack notes that some include cleanup in their rate and others charge extra. Our estimates state how chips and surface cleanup will be handled.
